Creating a calm, safe home for someone living with dementia

Small changes to routine, lighting and layout can reduce anxiety and support independence at home.

Creating a calm, safe home for someone living with dementia

People living with dementia often feel most secure when days follow a familiar rhythm. Keeping wake-up, meal and rest times consistent, and placing everyday items where they are easy to see and reach, helps reduce confusion.

Good lighting, clear walkways and removing trip hazards make the home safer. Labels on cupboards and doors, and a visible clock and calendar, can also support orientation.

Memory stimulation activities such as music, photographs and simple shared tasks keep connection alive. Caregivers trained in dementia care can help families adapt these ideas to the person, not the diagnosis.
